Semiahmoo plan updated to make way for Surrey BRT

The Semiahmoo Town Centre Plan has been amended to make way for the planned Bus Rapid Transit route planned along King George Boulevard.

This includes an update to the land use map and road network map to align with the King George BRT terminus being located at 152 Street and 16 Avenue.

The reference concept design finalized the terminus of the BRT on the north side of 16 Avenue, west of 152 Street.

An extended bus pullout will be provided on 16 Avenue to accommodate the BRT station and sufficient layover for up to three buses while not obstructing the existing two westbound lanes on 16 Avenue.

“This will support ultimate redevelopment in the area and be a focal point for transit-oriented development,” said a city staff report.

Running from Surrey City Centre to Semiahmoo Town Centre, the BRT will feature 12 stations along a 19-kilometre corridor. It will have dedicated lanes along most of the route, providing fast, reliable service to support Surrey’s Town Centres. 

As part of the Semiahmoo Town Centre Plan, the originally anticipated BRT terminus was located near 16 Avenue/156 Street, which informed portions of the transportation road network and land-use in the plan area.

The Semiahmoo Town Centre Plan amendment includes changes to the road network, road cross-sections, legacy bus layover provisions no longer required, and land-uses in isolated areas as a result of the BRT station now being finalized at 16 Avenue and 152 Street.

As a result of the relocation of the BRT terminus, the road network plan has been updated to remove 16A Avenue between 156 Street and 157 Street, as the road is no longer needed to support BRT operations, and a lane has been added between 1646 – 156A Street/1643 – 157 Street and 1636 – 156A Street/1633 – 157 Street to

support neighbourhood access.

The road network plan has also been updated by removing 23A Avenue between 152 Street and 154 Street and alternatively extending 22 Avenue from 152A Street to 154 Street, which provides for a continuous east-west corridor through the Semiahmoo Town Centre and connects to 156 Street.
