Here is everyone running in Surrey in the B.C. election

Surrey has five parties running candidates across its 10 ridings — with a few independents — in the upcoming provincial election on Oct. 24.

The governing B.C. NDP won four seats in Surrey during the last election, with the B.C. Conservative Party sweeping up the other six. Gary Begg won the Surrey-Guildford riding by just 22 votes over the conservative candidate and gave the NDP its one-seat majority.

The NDP’s bid for re-election includes creating a tax-hike for millionaires to fund health care, freezing car insurance rates for three years and capping grocery prices on essential items like milk and eggs.

However, the party under leader David Eby has faced criticism for the province’s unprecedented deficit, cutting public service jobs, halting health care expansions and even calling the snap election when it was widely unpopular.

Both Conservatives leader Lorne Doerkson and Eby have spent time campaigning in the city and many are calling Surrey a battleground between the two large parties.

The Conservatives are running on a platform based upon tax cuts, repealing SOGI 123 in schools and doubling LNG production, among other things.

SOGI 123 is not a course taught in schools, but instead an educational tool with resources to help teachers make spaces inclusive for all sexual orientations and gender identities — some have scrutinized what being anti-SOGI actually means and whether the party is simply using it as a guise for not accepting the LGBTQ+ community.

Surrey Cloverdale MLA Elenore Sturko originally won the 2024 provincial election as part of the Conservative party, but was later ousted by then-leader John Rustad and sat as an independent.

Now, Sturko is the leader of CentreBC — the party has candidates in all ridings except Surrey Guildford. The party is promising to create 25,000 new school seats by 2031, hire 500 RCMP officers over five years and build a made-in-Canada AI economy.

The B.C. Green Party are running seven candidates in Surrey and the party under Emily Lowan’s leadership is offering a left alternative to the NDP. So far, the Greens have promised to restart the $10-a-day child-care pledge, create a wealth-tax and institute a climate plan.

While ballots will show only six candidates from OneBC running in Surrey, there are actually eight, but “paper technicalities” stopped James Yaroshuk and Denis R Hurtubise from having the party affiliation next to their names. The party leader, Dallas Brodie, was also expelled from the conservative party for mocking residential school survivors; Brodie has continued to platform Indigenous residential school denialism and if elected, the party plans to repeal and oppose Indigenous rights.

Freedom of B.C. party is another far-right group running one candidate in the Surrey Serpentine River riding. Their main platform point is to ban SOGI 123 — the party was founded by the same man who was recently charged with vandalizing a rainbow crosswalk in Surrey.
