Surrey, TransLink reach deal to develop Newton land

A partnership between the Surrey City Development Corporation and TransLink has led to the Newton Centre Master Development Plan, which aims to build a vibrant, compact, and transit-oriented town centre on public land in the heart of Newton over the next 30 years.

The new plan sets the vision for 35 acres of public lands owned by the City of Surrey with five acres owned by TransLink, located along King George Boulevard near 72 Avenue.

Across lands owned by the partners, the plan envisions:

  • 2.2 million sqft development
  • 2,200+ new residential units
  • 4,000+ new residents
  • 150,000+ sqft retail space
  • New Newton community centre, funded by the City of Surrey
  • 15.7 acres of parks and open space

“The Newton Centre Master Development Plan will help create a more walkable, transit-oriented neighbourhood, and it demonstrates how our Real Estate Development Program can support housing and services while generating long-term revenue,” said Kevin Quinn, CEO, TransLink.

The Master Plan adheres to the City of Surrey’s Newton Centre Plan, which was adopted by council on July 13, 2020.

The Master Development Plan establishes a vision for future development in the Newton neighbourhood, incorporating plans for the proposed King George Boulevard Bus Rapid Transit route – which includes a nearby station location.

“We’re excited to share the Newton Centre Master Development Plan — a long-term vision to transform underutilized public lands into a vibrant, transit-oriented community at the heart of Newton,” said Bill Aujla, president and CEO, Surrey City Development Corporation. “This plan reflects years of community planning and will bring a mix of new homes, civic amenities, and local commercial spaces to the neighbourhood, supported by significant public investment.”
